Description & Services
Information | The first community gathering spot on Tancook was called Gideon Hall which can still be seen today sitting on the hillside opposite the Government Wharf. Most islanders today still remember the dances and gatherings that went on inside this building. After many years this building began to depreciate and was replaced in June of 1976 with the Tancook Recreational Centre, a 40' x 60' structure costing $55,000. Today the building is multi-functional, housing the islands emergency response association and summer tourism site, as well as being a recreational centre. The centre is used regularly for training, dances, fundraisers, wedding receptions, family reunions, private parties, elections polling station, veterinary visits, health care services, funeral receptions, private catering and public meetings. It is a meeting place for the local fire and medical emergency response association and the harbor authority, as well as the recreational association. The building is used by the neighboring elementary school on a weekly basis for physical education, for seasonal parties and their Christmas concert, and provides the elementary school with its water supply. It is opened during the summer months as a tourism and comfort centre, providing information, snacks, drinks and a public washroom. |
Hours | Summer tourism hours (subject to change): Monday-Friday 11:30 am to 4:15 pm; Sunday 11:00 am to 4:30 pm. July and August. |
