Description & Services

Information Here at Whycocomagh Education Centre we have students from grades primary to eight with an enrollment of approximately 175 students. Currently our school is involved in a provincial initiative called “School Accreditation”. Beginning the process in 2007, we determined what the school’s greatest needs are and we have worked to improve in those areas over a four year period. We received our Provincial Accreditation status in May 2011. We are now working on identifying areas where we can improve over the next two or three years. Our goals have been identified and they are:

Academic goal: To increase the percentage of students who are meeting curriculum expectations in the are of automaticity (quick thinking) in numbers and operations.

School Performance Goal: through expanded opportunities to contribute to and explicit invitation to participate in school activities, to increase the number of parents who participate in the school community.

At WEC we strive to achieve Academic Excellence and we incorporate environmental initiatives in our curriculum as often as we can. We follow the recycling and composting guidelines for the County; we try to keep our school yard free of litter; students are involved in a flower planting/beautifying project every spring and our students also have the benefit of other programs in our school which further enhances our environmental initiatives.

Our school offers Core French, Core Mi'kmaq and Core Gaelic language programs to students in grades four to eight. We have a number of sports teams: soccer, volleyball, basketball, badminton, table tennis, track and softball. We have a school drama club, lego club, winds' & whistles, club string band club and running club, as well as many other opportunities and groups in which students can share their skills and talents.

Whycocomagh Education Centre is located on the beautiful Bras d’Or Lakes surrounded by mountains. Canada Geese, along with other birds, are seen often on the Lake and eagles are often sited in the trees around the school grounds.
