Description & Services
Information | Shambhala Sun Summer Camp is a outdoor, sleep-away summer camp for youth ages 10 to 16. Campers leave behind television, video games, and other kinds of urban entertainments in exchange for the simplicity of living in a tent in nature. Experiencing the weather, cooking and eating together, practicing being awake and aware, and taking part in other traditional camp activities form the basis for a simple, profound experience. Sun Camp is inspired and based on the Shambhala Buddhist teachings, but is open to people of all backgrounds and interests. There are three camps offered at Shambhala Sun Summer Camp in Tatamagouche: Cadet Command Workshop, Shambhala Sun Summer Camp, and Rites of Warriorship. Cadet Command Workshop The Cadet Command Workshop (CCW) is a three day intensive training program for youth ages 14 to 16, who have previously attended Sun Camp. The program focuses on developing leadership skills that participants will need to help prepare and take care of the environment in which Sun Camp will take place. CCW is a way of preparing the ground before the younger participants arrive. To attend Cadet Command Workshop, participants must be 14 years old as of Sept 30th, and no more than 16 years old by June 30th, in the year of application. Applicant must have also attended at least one previous Shambhala Sun Summer Camp. Shambhala Sun Summer Camp Sun Camp is a one week long, outdoor program open to any participant age 10 to 16 years. To attend Shambhala Sun Summer Camp, the camper must be at least 10 years old as of Sept 30th and no more than 16 years old by June 30th in the year of application. Rites of Warriorship Rites of Warriorship is for 16 year olds and, although the program immediately follows Sun Camp, it is a separate program. According to the Shambhala tradition, 16 is the age marking the end of childhood and the beginning of adulthood. The Rites of Warriorship is an opportunity for those who are 16 to step directly through this transition. The requirements for participation in the Rites of Warriorship are: Sixteenth birthday before September 30 in the year of participation, and no more than 21 years old at the beginning of the program. The completion of a least one level of Shambhala Training or attendance at one Sun Camp or Magyal Pomra Encampment. Some interest in further Shambhala or Buddhist study and practice. |
