Description & Services

Information The Shubenacadie Wildlife Park is owned and operated by the Nova Scotia Department of Lands and Forestry, and places special emphasis on providing a wide range of recreational and educational opportunities for visitors to the park. The staff is knowledgeable and available to answer questions about the park and animals. There are also many interpretive panels throughout the park which provide information about the animals.

Many of the animals at the Wildlife Park have come from other zoological facilities in North America where they were born in captivity. They feel at ease around people and activity, so they are often able to been seen by visitors. Other animals have arrived at the park orphaned, sick and/or injured. It is the park's policy to provide the best care possible to orphaned and sick animals in need, with the ultimate goal of being released back into the wild. Even with the best rehabilitative care, sometimes it is not in the animal's best interest to be released into the wild, as their injuries have not healed or they have become imprinted on humans. Releasing them would harm them, as it is very likely they would fall victim to human activities. The park does not remove animals from the wild for the sole purpose of public display.

There is a 10-hectare picnic area adjacent to the park, with tables, shelters, privy washrooms and running water, and a playground. The picnic area is also the starting point for the three and half kilometer round trip walk to the St. Andrew’s Marsh.

Leashed pets are permitted in our picnic area and on the trails but NOT in the area in which our captive wildlife is housed.
